A public sector employer is inviting applications from qualified and experienced veterinary professionals for two permanent and pensionable positions in Job Group “P”. The positions are based in Nairobi and are suitable for candidates with a strong background in veterinary medicine, animal health services, veterinary public health, disease control, animal welfare, and technical supervision.
The successful candidates will be responsible for supporting animal health services, veterinary public health services, animal disease control, animal welfare services, and related regulatory functions. The role also involves coordination of disease control activities, stakeholder training, veterinary inspections, forensic investigations, data analysis, reporting, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the veterinary sector.

Job Purpose
The Veterinary Officer position is responsible for providing animal health services, veterinary public health services, animal disease control services, and animal welfare services. The role is designed to support the effective delivery of veterinary services at both technical and supervisory levels.
The officer will be expected to contribute to the prevention, control, and management of animal diseases, promote good veterinary practices, support disease surveillance and mapping, inspect animal product processing facilities, and work with stakeholders to improve veterinary service delivery.
The position also involves supervision of Sub-County technical officers, coordination of pest and disease control activities, participation in economic impact assessments, forensic investigations, treatment of sick animals, and dissemination of information on animal health, animal products, and markets.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Veterinary Officer will perform both managerial and operational duties as outlined below.
Managerial and Supervisory Responsibilities
The officer will be responsible for providing technical guidance and supervision in the implementation of veterinary programmes and disease control activities.
Key duties will include:
Supervising Sub-County technical officers as they implement planned pest control activities.
Coordinating and promoting the development and transfer of appropriate technologies for disease control.
Providing guidance to field officers involved in animal health, disease control, and veterinary public health activities.
Supporting the implementation of planned veterinary programmes at the Sub-County level.
Ensuring that technical officers follow approved disease control procedures and veterinary service standards.
Supporting coordination between technical teams and relevant stakeholders involved in veterinary services.
Promoting effective implementation of animal disease control strategies.
Supporting the transfer of appropriate technologies that improve disease prevention, control, and response.
Providing technical input in pest control planning and implementation.
Ensuring that field veterinary services are delivered in a coordinated and professional manner.
Operational Responsibilities and Tasks
The Veterinary Officer will also be expected to carry out technical and operational responsibilities related to veterinary service delivery.
Key duties will include:
Participating in carrying out economic impact assessments on animal diseases.
Undertaking forensic investigations and compiling appropriate reports.
Offering veterinary services at ports of entry.
Undertaking disease control activities such as disease search, mapping, vaccination, and enforcement of livestock movement regulations.
Training stakeholders on vector control programmes, animal health, breeding, welfare, and good veterinary practices.
Treating sick animals.
Analysing data and preparing reports on animal health, products, and markets.
Undertaking postmortem examination and other diagnostic tests.
Interpreting laboratory results and making appropriate recommendations.
Inspecting, grading, and licensing plants processing animal products and transport carriers or containers.
Examining and issuing animal health certificates.
Participating in field efficacy trials for drugs, vaccines, and acaricides.
Disseminating data and information on animal health, products, and markets.
Collaborating with stakeholders in providing veterinary services.
